Marci S asked:

I’m doing a 30 minute workout on an eliptical machine and doing situps and push ups after that. I really want to target my belly fat. I’m a female 5’7 and about 170LBS. How many situps a day do I need to do to be beneficial? Or if you know of another excersize that would help that would be nice to know also. Thanks.

  1. situps give ya muscle, which makes it look good but does not get rid of belly fat…

try hulla hooping, i’ve heard that works.

  3. There are several issues to address in your question.

    1) If you are trying to reduce fat, you need to eat less and exercise in the 60 – 70% heart rate range. When you go above this range, into cardio/aerobic range, you begin increasing the strength of your heart and lungs, but no longer burning fat most efficiently.
    2) Targeting the abdominal muscles through sit-ups will build the muscles but not decrease fat in any specific area.
If you want to strengthen your muscles and increase the definition, begin by doing as many sit-ups as you can. Then do the same number plus one the next day. Continue to add 1 more each day – allowing yourself a couple days off every week – until you reach 50 or more.

So – you will need a two pronged approach. Loose fat through eating fewer calories (especially after 9 pm) and build muscles through workouts with sit-ups.

  4. It depends on your metabolism. Some people loose weight and firm up easier than others depending on how high their metabolism is.If your really energetic all the time it won’t take as many as someone who is laid back except when they work out.
